What we cover

What we run, and what you will still need.

Steeple runs the ministry side of your church: people, giving, Sundays, kids, groups, events and the messages that hold it together. It does not do your books, your payroll or your livestream, and no church software honestly does all of it. Here is the line, drawn plainly, so nobody signs up thinking they have bought everything.

What you will still need

Ten things we do not do.

For each one: what to get, the part we handle, and where our part stops. If you use something for one of these today, keep it.

Bookkeeping and accounting

You will need: Accounting software and whoever keeps your books: a treasurer, a bookkeeper or a church accountant.

Steeple handles
Record every gift, split it by fund, produce year-end giving statements, and export balanced journal entries for QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop or Aplos.
Steeple does not
Bills, bank reconciliation, budgets, a chart of accounts, or your financial reports to the board.

Payroll and clergy tax

You will need: A payroll service, and a CPA who understands ministers' housing allowance and dual tax status.

Steeple handles
Keep the staff directory, departments, reporting lines, time-off requests and background-check dates.
Steeple does not
Pay anyone, withhold anything, or file anything with the IRS or your state.

Livestreaming and video hosting

You will need: A streaming setup (camera, encoder, and somewhere to stream to such as YouTube or Facebook) and a place to host sermon video and audio.

Steeple handles
List every sermon with its series, notes and scripture, and link to the video and audio wherever you host them.
Steeple does not
Stream, record, or store video and audio files for you.

Advanced stage production

You will need: If your booth runs several screen outputs, timecoded video cues, lighting or the sound desk from one place, keep your dedicated presentation software.

Steeple handles
Lyric, scripture and sermon slides built from your service plan, a live controller, a full-screen projector output and a stage display with notes and a timer, all in a browser.
Steeple does not
Control lights, audio, cameras or video switchers.

A full website

You will need: A website builder or web designer if you want your own domain, custom pages, a blog, or a design that is entirely yours.

Steeple handles
Public pages for your church, live the day you sign up: events with registration, a group finder, sermons, forms and connect cards, a prayer wall, staff and giving. Link to them from any website.
Steeple does not
Build custom pages, run a blog, or serve the pages on your own domain.

A congregation app

You will need: A branded church-app vendor, if you want an app your whole congregation downloads from the Apple and Google stores.

Steeple handles
Your staff, leaders and volunteers can install Steeple to their phone's home screen and get push notifications for what they are responsible for. Everyone else reaches you through your public pages, email and text.
Steeple does not
Publish a branded app to the App Store or Google Play, or send push notifications to members who do not have a login.

The background screening itself

You will need: An account with a screening company, in your church's name. They run each check and bill you directly; none of it goes through us.

Steeple handles
Connect your own Checkr account to send invitations and pull results back automatically, track screenings from any other provider by hand, and remind you before anyone's check expires.
Steeple does not
Run a criminal record search, or decide whether a result clears someone to serve.

Policies, insurance and legal advice

You will need: A child-protection policy, insurance cover and a lawyer you can call. Your insurer may have requirements of its own.

Steeple handles
Record what your policy requires: security codes at kids' pickup, allergies on labels, who has a clear check, and a log of who changed what.
Steeple does not
Make your church compliant. Software records what you do; it cannot be your policy.

Staff email, phones and documents

You will need: Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for staff inboxes and files, and a phone system for the office.

Steeple handles
Email and text your congregation, with a shared two-way inbox for texts.
Steeple does not
Host your staff's own mailboxes, calendars, documents or office phone line.

The building's own systems

You will need: Whoever runs door access, security cameras, heating and cooling, and the wifi your check-in tablets use.

Steeple handles
Book rooms with setup and teardown time, catch clashes before they happen, and track maintenance requests.
Steeple does not
Connect to locks, cameras, thermostats or your network.
Putting it together

What a typical church ends up running.

Most churches already pay for some of this. The useful question is not whether you need other tools, it is how many separate church-software subscriptions Steeple replaces, and the comparison page shows what that is worth in dollars.
